Note the small graphic with this article. It shows how most English words are very similar to many other English words. For example, light, might, bright, tight, weight, trite, blight, light. You as a real reader can sound out the differences. But your seven-year-olds going to first grade will not have that edge or that understanding. They will soon be lost unless they are taught the letters and the sounds.
Let's Fix Education explains to Americans why their schools are so bad. The people in charge prefer mediocrity because they are socialists of one kind or another. If people work together to promote real education, we'll have it.
