Episode 179:  Religion versus Science: where’s that go?  (Wed., Dec. 4, 2024)

Science or Religion, which do you prefer? Another question is, which do you hope is true?

My main generalization about the universe is that it's insanely chaotic and mysterious. Science and Religion are two ways of grappling with the chaos and mystery. I recommend both.

Historically speaking, Science and Religion trade places when it comes to supremacy. One is all-powerful and then the other takes over. Theories seem to explain everything until they are kicked out on the street.

Let's Fix Education explains to Americans why their schools are so bad. The people in charge prefer mediocrity because they are socialists of one kind or another. If people work together to promote real education, we'll have it.

Religion versus Science: where’s that go?

For thousands of years, Religion decided what was true or not. Then several centuries ago, Science emerged in its full glory.

Science was contemptuous, scornful, sure of itself. Religion was old-fashioned and probably told lies like the story of the  Easter bunny.

Late 1800s we could describe everything in terms of pool balls crashing into each other. If you knew the mass and the speed of the balls, you knew that certain things would happen. The universe is predictable, whether looking forward or backward.

Mid-1900s Science pretty much ended debate. According to every press release, Science was closing in on absolute truth and a full description of the universe, also known as a Theory of Everything (TOE).

Then something very strange happened. In the second half of the 20th century, every time they find a new particle, they discover more mysteries. A particle is supposed to be a fundamental part. But fundamental particles known as quarks turned out to have further qualities such as Truth and Beauty. The physicists seemed to be high on nitrous oxide.

Even as Science was proclaiming an overarching theory of the universe, suddenly the  evidence pointed in the other direction. It was like watching two pugilists hanging on each other, too exhausted to make sense of anything.

The good thing about Religion is that it teaches humility as a virtue, not as a sad acknowledgment of your defeat. Religion is how the human race tries to deal with the universe.

The arrogance of thinking you know everything is bad for your judgment. No matter whether you prefer Science or Religion, you are probably humbled to hear that the universe contains a trillion galaxies, each with a trillion stars, give or take. What can our brain do with such numbers?

There was a time when Science sounded very sane and Religion sounded nuts. But we have now moved back around on the other side of the moon. Science sounds nuts discussing quantum computing where a value can simultaneously be one and zero.

Contemporary Sciences say: everything you probably think of when you think of the “universe” (such as planets, stars, galaxies, black holes, and dust) makes up just 4% of whatever is out there. The rest comes in two “flavors”: dark matter at 23% percent of the universe and dark energy at a whopping 73%. All of that information strikes me as quite crazy.

I enjoy reminding myself that I'm just a grain of sand on the endless cosmic beach. Very unimportant. However, each of us is as important as anything else.

Now we're close to Christmas and that has to remind many of the Shroud of Turin. Religion says it’s the burial shroud of Jesus. But the Science seems to change every century: yes, no, maybe. The technical details of the image on the cloth cannot be explained in any normal way. So God has a sense of humor? Or the truth has depths and then more depths?

Everywhere you look there's a lot of lovely but overwhelming complexity. Here's an update about the latest findings about the shroud; and another about “the biggest mystery in the universe.”
