Our professors of education keep coming up with new theories about how classrooms should be conducted. They want less emphasis on knowledge and academic content. They want more emphasis on what the children are thinking and feeling.
This may sound tempting. It might be helpful in some situations. But keep in mind the number of students, the complexity of their lives, and the range of knowledge we want the students to acquire. Typically, we find that at the end of the year, kids have learned less and less. That’s the weird triumph of K-12 education.
